DRIVING THEM NUTS
One of the more interesting reactions to my Beyond Transgressionism essay was having people wonder why it was necessary to be so public with our rejection of the “norms of bdsm.” After all, would it not be easier to just go the party route and ignore the rule-makers?
Well, the answer is really quite simple. By being public with our transgressions, we lead by example. Now, let me put in a proviso here. There are folks who absolutely have to be closeted. They have occupations that are somewhat sensitive, like day-care operators, or social workers, jobs that actually could be jeopardized by an unconventional lifestyle. And there are those who for some bizarre reason really don’t want to shock the relatives, which makes no sense to me unless they stand to inherit lots of money, but that’s their affair and we must respect it.
And we have to be intelligent and realize that it is not always the best thing to do. If one is invited to the house-warming party of the slave’s boss, one does not wear a tool-belt with whips hanging from it. That is not being out, that is being ill-mannered and we can leave that to the old guard. who, after all, are the experts at bad manners.
What I am talking about is intelligently breaking the norms and then ramming that breaking down the throats of those who would object. It is not enough for them to be powerless over us, they must KNOW that they are powerless. They have to be taught the lesson of the school bully who picks on what appears to be the smallest kid in the school and then hears the click of the switchblade as it opens and feels the point of the knife at his throat.
We are that knife!
The rule-makers pride themselves on their ability to control the scene, to determine who shall and shall not be welcome among them. But we welcome the outcasts and the troublesome. We make them part of us and find uses for the very qualities that the others find annoying. And, in doing so, we strip the ruling dogs of their power because they cannot limit access. As long as we are around there is nothing, absolutely nothing they can do except disapprove.
And if disapproval is the only weapon a man has, he is poorly armed indeed.
Thus, by being public, not going quietly away, but broadcasting our ways to the world, by smashing SSC and burning the leather flag, we allow others to also reject the establishment and feel good about themselves in the process. After all, it is cool to be an outlaw, a renegade and especially cool if one can demonstrably get away with it. We create the place where they can get away with it.
So give us your outcasts, your inept and shy. Give us your brats. Give us your people who just don’t quite fit in, the ones with thick glasses and too much education for your unlettered, leather clad bumpkins. Give us your mad doms whom everyone considers “dangerous.” Give us your lonely and afraid. Give us your “wretched refuse.” For we were once that wretched refuse ourselves and in rising above it, we will raise them with us.
And we will drive the rule-makers, and the safety sluts, and law-abiding chicken-shits and all those who worship at the altar of “community”, while forgetting the individuals whom that community is made to serve, from the face of the earth!
