PUBLIC IMAGE
There are a few things, well, maybe more than a few, about scene people that drive me up the wall and over the battlements and one of them is the idea that we should censor ourselves so that BDSM will have a good public image. That idea is nothing short of disgusting and cowardly and must be ignored.
Consider this. Would anyone in their right mind tell an artist that he should not create a work because it might reflect badly on the “arts community?” Or would anyone be so foolish as to tell a writer that he should not write something because it would make the “writer community” look bad? Of course not! No one would be that damned stupid because they know exactly what they would be told. But we hear that sort of utter, total crap in the BDSM community all the time.
We are told to act like the vile nillers so the precious niller feelings will not be hurt or, worse, their little brats may have nightmares! We are told to avoid certain types of play at our parties lest word get out and horrible things result.
BULL MANURE!!!!
We owe the nillers and their offspring nothing! We do not have to care what people think of us. We merely have to make them care what we think of them and that is precious little. We must learn to do what the writers and artists, who fought the same battles we are fighting a hundred or so years ago, did. Find out what people do not like about us and then ram that down their throats.
To hell with the idea of a good public image. What we need is a powerful and ruthless public image.
And if we succeed in that, then that is all the image we will ever need.
As the wise Roman Emperor said, “Let them hate us, as long as they fear us.”
