THPIRITUALITY
Ok, folks, I finally get it!
For some time I've wondered why all the "spirituality" bullshit is popping up with regard to BDSM. I mean, yes, it is a tool of consciousness. But why the emphasis, the writing, the classes, the flocking of the scenelebrities to its banner?
I think I've figured out the reason.
Now, let me start by saying there is another theory out there which has some merit and that it is all a conspiracy to make BDSM acceptable to the trailer-trash niller scum by presenting it as a "spiritual path" a religious belief in its own right as it were. And that may very well be the case. It is the sort of thing that I would expect from these folks. The only problem is that that level of cynicism would require a level of intelligence that they simply do not possess.
But I actually think it is something far nastier and far less conscious. I think it is just another excuse for one group of scene people to proclaim that they are superior to everyone else in the scene.
I mean think about it. You have Guy Baldwin's whining gay rant a few years back about how the godless hets were letting just everyone into the scene and it was all horrible and open and no more fun for boring blowhards like Guy Baldwin and his ilk who really thought that it mattered who fisted whose motorcycle in 1952 and get all teary eyed over being accepted by people that the rest of us would not let take out our garbage.
These folks need to feel that they are better than everyone else, especially better than the folks who really ARE better than THEY are (like everyone). Since they cannot compete on the play floor anymore, and no one respects their silly titles and awards, they feel a need for something else, to proclaim that they have something "deeper." It is just another variant on the sort of nonsense we heard a few years back about Secret European Houses . Well, that does not work any more, everyone laughs at it.
So now it is spirituality. BDSM is not about getting our rocks off (yeah, right, and the moon is made of cheese!), it is about a deeper, personal relationship with the inner soul, a path to enlightenment, which is expressed by tying up and torturing our loved ones and maybe channeling Tomas de Torquemada on a good day. (Ok, I'll admit it, I like playing to Gregorian Chants.)
So you get the idea that it is all a load of crap? You're right. It IS a load of crap. And we have to deal with BDSM Spirituality the same way we dealt with the "European Council." We have to laugh it out of existence!
